Kyiv area: 836 sq.km. Only 350 sq. km or 42,3 % have been built up within the city limits. All the rest is the area of reservoirs and forest tracts and green plantings in general use.

Location: Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is built on hills overlooking the Dnepr River, in the north central part of the country.

Climate: The climate in Kiev is moderate. Winter is rather mild, with no severe frosts but with regular snowfalls. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. The average winter temperature varies -15 Centigrade. Summer is quite hot and dry, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The fertile black soil is well watered in spring and autumn and gets plenty of sunshine in summer.

Local time: +2 hours CET (+7 hours from New York, +10 hours from Los Angeles). The time in Ukraine is set two hours ahead of the Universal time in Greenwich. To save electric power, it is altered twice a year. The watches are set one hour forward in the last week of March and one hour backward in the last week of October.
